Cognitive development in children
Cognitive development is how a child learns to think: paying attention, remembering, solving problems, sorting and matching, and understanding how things work. It starts with a baby looking for a toy that has been hidden and builds, by six years, to counting, naming letters and putting things in order.
What cognitive development means
Cognitive skills are the thinking skills underneath everything else your child does. They cover attention, memory, problem solving, matching and sorting, understanding size and number, and knowing that an object still exists when it is out of sight.
Unlike walking or talking, cognitive development is hard to see happening. A baby who lifts a cloth off her face to find you is doing something significant, but it does not look like a milestone the way a first step does. That is why cognitive gaps are often noticed later than motor or language ones.
It also overlaps with the other five areas. A child who cannot yet name colours may have a language gap rather than a thinking one, and a child who will not do a puzzle may be struggling with the finger control rather than the problem. This is why a check that covers all six areas tells you more than looking at one.
What to expect at each age

Being behind in one area at one moment is common. These are the situations where it is worth asking a professional rather than waiting.
- A skill has gone backwards. A child who could match, sort or name things and no longer will should be seen. This matters more than any single milestone being late.
- No searching for hidden things by around 12 months. Looking for something that has gone out of sight is one of the earliest thinking skills.
- Difficulty with simple pretend play by three. Feeding a doll or pushing a block as if it were a car shows a child can hold an idea in mind.
- Cognitive skills much further behind than the other five areas, and staying that way over a few months.
- You are worried. Parents are usually right about their own child. An appointment that confirms everything is fine costs very little.
Who to speak to
Start with your paediatrician or family doctor, who can refer you onwards. Depending on what they find, that may be a clinical psychologist, an occupational therapist, or an early intervention service. Taking a written record of what your child can and cannot do makes that first appointment much more useful.
Activities that help
Thinking skills are built through ordinary play rather than teaching. These are from our activity library, and each one names its source.
Fill and empty a cup
Give her safe objects to put into a cup or container one at a time, then tip them out together. Taking things out comes first; putting them in comes later.
Match things that go together
Two spoons, two cups of the same colour, a spoon and a cup. Matching is the start of sorting, which is the start of understanding categories.
A large-piece puzzle
Let her try pieces in the wrong holes without correcting her. The trial and error is the learning; solving it for her removes the point.
What is missing?
Put out three objects, let him look, then cover them and take one away. Ask which one has gone. This builds working memory, which underpins school learning.
Sort the washing
Socks by colour, big clothes and small clothes. Everyday chores make better sorting practice than toys, and they mean something to the child.

What is cognitive development in simple words?
It is how a child learns to think — paying attention, remembering, working things out, sorting and matching, and understanding size, number and order.
What are the four stages of cognitive development?
Piaget described four: sensorimotor (birth to about two), preoperational (two to seven), concrete operational (seven to eleven) and formal operational (eleven and up). It is a useful map, but children do not move between stages on a schedule, and a milestone checklist is more practical for judging where one particular child is.
How can I improve my child's cognitive development?
Ordinary play, conversation and being allowed to solve things without rescue do most of the work. Sorting, matching, puzzles, hiding games and being read to all help. Screen time and flashcards are far less useful than they look.
Is cognitive development the same as intelligence?
No. Cognitive development describes the skills a child has built so far, which change with age, experience and opportunity. It is not a fixed measure of ability, and a check like this one is not an IQ test.
When should I worry about cognitive delay?
If a skill has been lost, if thinking skills are clearly behind your child's other areas and stay behind over a few months, or if your own instinct says something is wrong. Speak to your doctor rather than waiting to see.
